Delaware Dirt Track Association Yoder Crowned 2009 DDTA Track Champion
Story by Bruce C. Walls
FARMINGTON, DE-Delaware Dirt Track Association racers were rewarded for their 2009 season efforts Saturday February 27th at the Farmington, DE Fire Hall. Highlighting the evening’s awards was Ken Yoder crowned 2009 Track Champion. In addition to being named Track Champion Yoder, an East Earl, PA Suzuki pilot, earned two championships topping tallies in 450A where he collected a 6-point advantage over second place Tom Majeski and in Sportsman A where he outscored Mike Poe by 13 points 30-17. “ Winning combined championships was great, but this is the icing on the cake,” beamed Yoder, of East Earl, PA who rides a Suzuki mount. Perry Phillips was third in the 450A points count followed by veterans McGrane and Travis Diem. In Sportsman A Roy Miller, McGrane and Majeski made up the rest of the field. “What makes these championships special is that the whole series was raced on the same track and riders just need to come out on top,” Yoder said Also picking up two championship trophies were Malasa, NJ based Georgie Price, son of legendary flat tracker Georgie Price. Young Georgie earned a pair of championships. In 65cc he narrowly beat his six-year-old brother Jonathan by a single point and in 85cc he out tallied Chase Smith by a single point. Jonathan topped the 50cc Division beating Ford Weber 4 to 3. Trailing Weber in 50cc’s top five were Logan McGrane, Jacob Humphrey and Chase Smith. “It’s an unbelievable feeling. I’m as proud as can be,” Georgie Price described. “Both kids are doing good. They’re riding real smooth and safe. I don’t really push them. They just take their time. My grandfather told me you be smooth first and speed will come as you go along.” In 65cc Smith and Billy Boram were third and fourth which completed the field. Smith trailed Price in 85cc and was followed in the points count by Kyle McGrane. “It feels pretty good winning two championships,” said 11-year-old Georgie Price who pilots Honda and Kawasaki bikes. Veteran Ken Yoder collected a pair of championship trophies and was named 2009 Track Champion. Yoder, of East Earl, PA, championed 450A with a six-point advantage over second place Tom Majeski. Perry Phillips was third in the count followed by veterans McGrane and Travis Diem. “What makes these championships special is that the whole series was raced on the same track and riders just need to come out on top,” said Yoder, who rides a Suzuki mount. Yoder also clinched Sportsman A’s title where he outscored fellow veteran Mike Poe 30-17. Roy Miller was third in the count followed by a pair of Tom’s McGrane and Majeski. “This makes it twice as good,” Yoder laughed. After being named Track Champion he added, “ Winning combined championships was great, but this is the icing on the cake.” Goodville, PA pilot Roy Miller, another Suzuki riding veteran, ruled the 250 Sportsman point count with a 4-point edge over Kevin Bills. “It takes consistency and a lot of help from family,” Miller credited for his championship. “I’d like to thank my wife and kids, I’m just having fun.” Further back Rebecca Zafia; Diem and Tyler Phillips completed the top five in points. Greg Lerch led Open B’s point’s chase earning 18 points to edge out brother Steve Lerch who earned 17 points. Zafia was third again this time followed in the top five by Anthony Grabbe and Shain Bourssa. Vet A saw Scott Mullen and Ray Jenkins tied for the lead. Mullen was awarded the championship and Jenkins was relegated to second. In the battle for third Majeski and Ken Halderman were tied at four apiece with Majeski taking third, Halderman fourth and Don Mullen, Sr. fifth in the points fight. “It’s really special because it’s my first year I’ve been into flat track racing for the competition so that makes it even better to win a first place trophy,” said Mullan a Coatesville, PA based Honda rider. Dan Dougherty dominated Vet B’s point’s battle out scoring Anthony Barndt by three points 10 to7 points. Dave Moore was third in the tally followed in the top five by Ron Hipple and Diem. “This is unbelievable,” said the Wilmington, DE based Yamaha rider. “It’s so much fun at the Delaware Dirt Track Association this year that I can’t say enough about all the guys that helped me out. I basically came in not knowing anybody and now I have a bunch of friends, Mark, Al, Richard, Bill and all the guys helped me out and I appreciate it.” Samantha Bergmon bested the 100cc Adult Division inching by Matthew Lanpher three to two points. Chris Bardoff, Brian Starcher and Mark Tsogeros made up the remaining top five points finishers. Cliff Diem championed 125cc with a 2-point advantage over Ryan Varnes. Kyle McGrane was third. “You have to stay on the bike Diem said adding that he’s been flat track racing since 1966. “I’ll be 64-years-old in June,” he added with a smile. Kade Keily clinched the 250B title with a 4-point difference. Zafia was second, Matt Trout third with Greg Lerch and Ron Mercer following in fourth and fifth. The Pro Division champion was Perry Philips who out scored Mike Poe 2 to 1 with Jake Shoemaker rounding out the field. Racing was scheduled to resume with a practice day March 7th followed by the season’s first race March 28th. However, track owner Mark Miller told the audience that recent winter storms have flooded the track, which will take some time to dry. Phillips Aces Delaware Dirt Track Story and photos by HARRINGTON, DE-Honda rider Perry ‘Ace’ Phillips, of Coatesville, PA, earned a trio of wins Sunday November 8th at Delaware Dirt Track Association’s Harrington, DE 1/5-mile clay oval. Phillips produced wins in Pro, 450A and the event finale’ Cash Dash. In all three he fought off challenges from National rider #88 Raun Wood the whole ride. In 450A Phillips rocketed into the early lead with Wood getting beside him down the straights. Phillips went low in the turns to hold off Wood’s challenges. Wood looked high and low, but couldn’t get by Phillips’ Honda. “I just tried to be smooth. I knew it was slippery,” Phillips described. “I knew I had to get a good start, be cool and keep smooth and not let him (Ronnie Wood) get by me. The Honda bike handled good. The track got a little slick and I had to be easier with the throttle then in the heats and practice. I want to thank #21 Racing and my girl friend Kim, No Fear, Super Trapp and Saddleman.” Close behind Wood’s Honda in the top five were Suzuki pilot Ken Yoder, Rotax rider Tom McGrane, and Mike Poe’s Honda. Suzuki rider Travis Deim and Dalton Winkler rounded out the field. Phillips finished the day winning the 10-lap Cash Dash for which he pocketed $100. After fighting off Wood for four laps Wood went down giving Phillips an easy win. “I just had to be smooth again,” Perry, noted adding. “I didn’t get a chance to change anything so I knew what to expect.” Steve Lerch led 450 B riders across the stripe with brother Greg Lerch challenging him. Dan Jenkins was third across the finish line followed by Bergman and Zafia for the top five. Rounding out the field were Shain Bourassa and Cliff Diem. Phillips wasn’t the day’s only multi winner. Riders Billy Boram and Kyle McGrane earned double wins. Boram, of Cambridge, MD, soloed 65 and the ATV classes. McGrane did the same in 85 and 125B. Phoenix, MD based Suzuki bike rider Samantha Bergman captured the event’s first checkered flag winning 100cc over Matt Langsher. “You just have to watch where everybody else was going and pick the right lines and make sure they don’t get in front of you,” said the 20-year-old winner. The bike handled great, but the sun was a little bit in the way.” Honda mounted Mike Poe led 10-Sportsman riders across the finish line with Rotax rider McGrane trailing close behind. A very talented field of veterans trailed McGrane across the stripe. Yoder took third, followed by Steve Lerch in fourth with Deim rounding out the top five. Further back Dalton Winkles Roy Miller; Nick Henderson, Nick Arment and Ken Haldman completed the top 10. “Tommy McGrane runs a good race. It’s just that I got the hole shot and took advantage of that and won that one. The Honda bike was handling good I want to thank John Zafia for letting me ride their new ’09 450. It works real well and I appreciate it a lot.” Rebecca Zafia ruled 250 B. The 16-year-old Baltimore, MD based Kawasaki rider grabbed the hole shot and never looked back. Honda rider Greg Lerch and Kawasaki mounted Ron Mercer offered her early race challenges, but after a couple of laps Zafia stretched out her lead for the final laps. “I got a perfect start and I just stayed focused rode smooth, and led from start to finish. The Kawasaki bike handled perfectly. My trainer/mechanic Raun Wood set it up perfect for me.” Ray Jenkins and Anthony Brandt bested the Vet classes with Jenkins leading the A riders and Brandt the B class. Jenkins had Scott Mullen’s Honda threatening from second while Brandt fought off challenges from Ron Hipple. “I got a good hole shot and the track came around,” Jenkins said after his win. “They watered it down a little bit and it really hooked up and really worked well. The hole shot is everything here.” Behind Mullen were Halderman, Dan Mullen and Arron Humphrey. Trialing Hipple were Wayne Dill, Dan Daugherty and Jerry Evans. 250 Sportsman’s checkered flag flew for Roy Miller who had Nick Henderson and Ron Mercer trailing him across the finish line.
